Cy Twombly

  • BiographyCy Twombly was an American painter, sculptor, and photographer who developed a highly personal visual language combining gestural mark-making, calligraphic scrawls, and classical literary references to create works of dreamlike ambiguity. His large canvases—smeared, scratched, and annotated with words, numbers, and looping lines—occupy a singular position between Abstract Expressionism and conceptual art. He spent much of his life in Italy, where he drew on Mediterranean mythology and history to infuse his work with a sense of ancient time.
