Jack Whitten
Jack Whitten was an African American abstract painter who spent over five decades developing a singular, inventive approach to the canvas, using experimental tools and processes—from squeegees to Afro combs—to create dense, textured works he described as "quantum paintings." His work bridged Abstract Expressionism, Minimalism, and a deeply personal engagement with Black American history and global culture. He received a National Medal of Arts in 2015, and his influence on contemporary abstract painting has grown significantly since his death in 2018.

Egon Schiele
Egon Schiele was an Austrian Expressionist painter and protégé of Gustav Klimt, celebrated for his raw, emotionally charged depictions of the human body in contorted, often confrontational poses. His work pushed past the decorative aesthetics of Viennese Symbolism into territory that was explicitly erotic and psychologically unsettling, earning both scandal and acclaim during his short life. He died at just 28 during the 1918 influenza pandemic, leaving behind a legacy of intense self-portraits that remain enormously influential.
